Rebuilding Joplin, MO

The first five days of spring break, twenty students and seven adults worked in Joplin with Rebuild Joplin and Americorps. Crossroads College Prep volunteers removed debris from a forested area in the center of Joplin in a neighborhood where the majority of homes were lost and where trees and electric poles had snapped right off during the storm. Through their work on the second and third days, students connected with a local family of tornado survivors. Students worked to help restore the couple's backyard, formally a forested site with 30 mature trees, now it looks like a prairie with just two trees standing. When students arrived at local restaurants to eat, there were several occasions when a patron stopped eating in order to say "Thank you for coming" to our kids. On the final night, everyone gathered in a circle to share and the thoughts and ideas that were offered made us all proud to be members of the Crossroads' community. Despite the devastation students witnessed first hand, all in all, it was a beautiful trip.

Thank you to the adult members of the trip, Ben Birch (thanks for the hoodies), Carrie Nardie, Steve Such, Heather Testa, Liz Harry, Howard Granok, and Mark Norwood, but especially our parent volunteers. Thanks also to Brad Hagen for supplying all members of the trip in a variety of ways.

Our students were fantastic and represented Crossroads well in all they did. Many thanks to Catherine Turner, Will Matus, Benton Birch, Tess Couper, Charlotte Sechrist, Finn Nardie-Warner, August Gremaud, Sarah Such, Nick Kiehl, Connor Hagen, Flannery Allison, Elsie Asafo-Adjei, Ben Williams, Riley Corbett, Claudia Testa, Jonathan Pulphus, Jess Harry, Brendan Wood, Alex Carter, and Meredith Littlejohn.

Crossroads College Prep Chess Teams Place 3rd at Nationals

Congratulations to the Crossroads College Prep Chess Team for their outstanding performance at the National Scholastic Championships in Minneapolis. Both the Under 1200 and Under 800 teams finished in third place. This is the best overall finish for our teams in the history of Crossroads College Prep. The teams were in trophy contention throughout the three-day, seven-match tournament. Our longest match was just short of a grueling 4 hours! The tournament was comprised of seven four-hour matches, and many of our players spent at least three hours each round playing chess. After each round, the players analyzed their games with Howard or the other two coaches.

In the Championship Division, Matthew Larson improved his team-leading rating (at the time of the tournament, he was rated 1880, and as a result of the tounament, he is 1936. 2000 is considered "expert".) with a 5-2 record, earning a trophy and finishing in a tie for 30th place out of a possible 330 players. His last victory was against Expert chess phenom, Awonder Liang. Way to go, Matthew!

In the Under 1200 Division, three of our players finished with 5-2 records. Armand Turner-Gauda won a trophy for placing 29th out of 338 players, while Ben Williams and Noah Dromgoole won trophies for tying 30th place.

In the Under 800 Division, Flannery Allison and Paul Watkins each won a trophy for their 5-2 records, tying for 20th place out of a field of 215 players.

This was a great trip. We arrived in Minneapolis after 11 hours on the road. Friday morning the students enjoyed visiting the Mall of America prior to the start of the tournament, where they shopped and rode the roller coasters. After the tournament ended, we enjoyed a wonderful post-tournament meal at The Local, an Irish pub with excellent fish and chips, pot pies, and bangers and mash. All this, plus a special birthday dessert for Reid Doctor, who turned 14.

Here are our teams:

Championship section: Matthew Larson

Under 1200: Nick Kiehl , Noah Dromgoole, Armand Turner-Gauda, Benton Birch, Ben Williams, Reid Doctor, and August Gremaud

Under 800: Flannery Allison, Paul Watkins, Curtis Mitchell, Andrew Kowalkowski, Solomon Cooper, Homer Dula, and Katie Stujenske

I would like to thank my assistant coaches, Ed Dromgoole and Michael Bartley, for their valuable assistance to our winning teams this season. Also, many thanks to Jodi Granok for her role as statistician, chaperone, and organizer, and to Ben Birch for running errands for the team.

"Colin Witherspoon is a young man with a finance plan"

Posted: Thursday, April 5, 2012 12:05 am

Rivas | 0 comments

College junior Colin Witherspoon lives in the beautiful Barcelona, Spain – at least for the spring semester. And he couldn’t be happier, he said.

“I try to step outside my comfort zone everyday in order to experience life to the fullest and things in life that I would otherwise never know about,” said Witherspoon, a student from St. Louis studying finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The only thing gnawing at his stomach is whether or not he’ll find a finance-related internship in St. Louis this summer.

“Since arriving to Barcelona, I have had a hard time acquiring an internship because on campus recruiting at my school is in the spring semester,” he said. “Suffice it to say that I think most employers are looking for an applicant that can interview for a position face-to-face.”

Witherspoon graduated from Crossroads College Preparatory School in 2009 as an AP Scholar with distinction, a varsity basketball player and captain of the soccer team.

His biggest mentors have been his parents, Jan Good and Brian Witherspoon, as well as his late grandmother, Ella Mae Witherspoon.

“They have taught me to stay true to myself despite what anyone says or does,” he said. “They have also taught me to work hard day in and day out and to not get too down on yourself when times are tough.”

His family is a unique group, he said. Both of his parents are federal public defenders in downtown St. Louis, and his younger brother turns 17 in May.

“We are a pretty tight-knit clan, although sometimes my parents and I have to rein in my brother,” he said.

“My family has provided me with amazing support in all of my endeavors, and I would not be the person I am today without them. They encourage me to go out and experience the world on my own. They have not only taught me a lot about life, but every time I go home I can count on learning something new that I can take back to college.”

While a strong student of economics, Witherspoon also has a passion for environmental issues and a keen taste for fine arts.

In 2010, he acted as a liaison between a student group and Earth Aid Inc., an environmental flagship service that tracks households’ energy consumption and offers coupons in exchange for reduction in energy use.

That experience built upon his background as a student teacher in the Eco Act Environmental Leadership Program at the Missouri Botanical Garden St. Louis. During the summers of 2007 and 2008, he taught children in inner-city public schools about environment and sustainability through the program.

Aside from promoting sustainability, Witherspoon is also actively involved in a student organization that coordinates social events to promote fine arts for Penn students on campus. The group, Social Planning+ Events (SPEC) Art Gallery, organizes trips to auction houses and exhibitions and other events. Last fall, he interned at Philadelphia’s Bridgette Mayer Gallery, an abstract and contemporary art gallery that represents various local and national artists.

Ultimately, Witherspoon would like to get some experience in finance under his belt coming out of college and work for a couple of years in the field. Then he would like to start his own business.

“I look forward to living my life, learning, loving, traveling, and laughing,” he said. “I think a lot of times people are too focused on getting through the journey rather than experiencing it.”

The Crossroads College Prep chess team finished 2nd in the State Championships

The Crossroads College Prep chess team finished 2nd in the State Championships, our best finish in 10 years! Give the guys a pat on the back when you see them. Our very young middle school team finished just one point out of the trophies, too.

The HS kids played as a true team, backing each other up when needed. We had 12.5 out of a possible 16 points.

Two Crossroads College Prep Seniors Are Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced that
Class of 2012 members Alisa Berg and Nell Briggs have advanced to finalist standing.
Finalists are selected through several rounds of the competition. Of the 1.5 million
juniors who take the Preliminary SAT, approximately 50,000 students with the highest
Selection Index qualify for recognition. In early September, about 16,000 students, or
approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as
Semifinalists. In February, some 15,000 Finalists are notified that they have advanced to
finalist standing . The National Merit Scholarship Program awards 8,400 scholarships worth
more than $36 million.
“Being a National Merit Finalist is an honor that both students and their families can be
extremely proud of,” says Clark Daggett, head of school at Crossroads College Prep. “Beyond
the individual level, the accomplishments of Alisa and Nell are also representative of the
strength and depth of the Crossroads College Prep curriculum.”
Nell Briggs is an All-Conference athlete in volleyball, basketball, and soccer. A straight-A
student, she delights in learning for learning’s sake and once memorized pi to 400 digits. Alisa
Berg is a tri-lingual (English, French, and Lithuanian) artist who is an accomplished equestrian
competitor in dressage. Also a straight-A student, Alisa uses her artistic talents to raise
awareness for human and animal rights and is co-founder of the school’s Social Justice Club.

TerryWatkins, CCPS Class of 2012, wins the Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition and moves on to the state competition. This is Terry’s second win at the regional level. In 2011, Terry represented Missouri at the National Competition in Washington D.C.
Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. Poetry Out Loud was created in partnership by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation with the collaboration of State Arts Agencies as a way to foster the next generation of literary readers by building on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the popularity of rap music. Through Poetry Out Loud, students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

The Fall season this year has proven to be the finest in school history. Each of our 3 Fall Sports won of a championship. Congratulations to all of our student/athletes, coaches, and especially seniors.

The Girls’ Volleyball team went 10-0 in the SCAA, seizing their first ever conference championship. The team set the school team record for wins in a season finishing with a record of 20-7. Senior Nell Briggs was named Player of the Year in the SCAA while senior Dominique Brenston and sophomore Claudia Testa were named to the 1st Team All-SCAA. Senior Lindsey Emery was named to the 2nd Team. Briggs was also a unanimous choice for All-District in the State playoffs.

The Girls’ Tennis team captured their second consecutive District Championship with a convincing victory over Lutheran North. Junior Hana Mueller and senior Alana Slavin set the pace playing great singles all season. Sophomores Sara Such and Ellie Turner played extremely tough at #3 and #4 singles respectively, while seniors Flannery Allison and Blair Daniel were solid in doubles. This year’s team had a nice blend of experience and youth. The future looks bright for this already thriving program.

Cecilia and Ivan Boyers, an Alaskan Native Village, and the Caribbean West Indies

Last summer Cecilia '14 and Ivan Boyers '16 spent their summer vacations in Alaska and the Caribbean, respectively. The two teens were participants of VISIONS Service Adventures, an international service learning program.

Cecilia was one of 25 high school students who did community service projects while living in Tetlin Village, an indigenous Athabasca community. The teens renovated a playground and rebuilt an outdoor wooden basketball court. They also constructed a shade pavilion with roof and decking along the river for village elders, and organized a week-long summer camp for the children. The students milled some of the lumber used for construction projects.

The trip wasn’t all work for the youth volunteers. While in Alaska, participants learned firsthand about Athabasca culture through visits with families and elders, working side by side with community members, and also while attending traditional “Culture Camp”. The group backpacked and ice-climbed in the Wrangell-St. Elias Wilderness, viewed all sorts of wildlife, and toured an old mining town.

Ivan traveled as part of a group of middle school students to Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. The middle schoolers lived in a community center on a hill overlooking the Caribbean Sea. They built a school playground and public shade pavilion, dog houses for the Humane Society, helped give swimming lessons to young children, and vaccinated goats with the Department of Agriculture.

In Virgin Gorda, participants immersed in island culture during weekly dinners and in daily visits with locals. On weekends they explored “The Baths”, huge granite boulders that lie in piles on the beach, forming grottoes that open to the sea; they also hiked, snorkeled, explored the numerous beaches, and sailed to a neighboring island.

“Service is a powerful bridge to friendship and learning,” says Katherine Dayton, VISIONS Executive Director. “We give students tangible ways to be of use and to discover their own potential in the process. They live for awhile in a very different world from what they typically know, engaging in activities that build confidence and offer first-hand knowledge. Over the course of a month, they come to know the people whose lives they are impacting.”

VISIONS operates over a dozen high school and middle school programs in North, Central, and South America, the Caribbean West Indies, Southeast Asia, and Ghana. “Our program locations differ dramatically,” said Dayton, “but each offers cultural immersion, ambitious community service, and opportunities to explore places with local people in ways that are usually way off the tourist track.”

Crossroads beats Burroughs 1-0. Wins 1A Sectional Championship

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch-

Crossroads continued its improbable run through the postseason on Wednesday.

A crazy goal and a Herculean effort between the pipes gave Crossroads a stunning 1-0 victory over John Burroughs in a Class 1 boys soccer sectional.

The Current, who won their first district title last week, improved to 12-6 and will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday against St. Pius X.

The Bombers, No. 4 in the stlhighschoolsports.com small school poll, end their season at 15-9.

"They're resilient," first-year Crossroads coach Ben Peet said of his team. "We make the most of what we have."

Andre Witherspoon booted the game's only goal 40 seconds into the second half from nearly 40-yards away through a strong wind. The goal stood up, thanks in large part to a fantastic effort from keeper Brendan Wood. The senior goalie made 17 saves on the day, several coming on aggressive dives and athletic leaps.

"Last night I was really determined to go out and have a big game," Wood said. "I saved that attitude for today. This is fantastic."

The Bombers pelted Wood with shots all afternoon.

"We created more than enough chances," Burroughs coach Alan Trzecki said. "We had two or three games worth of chances."

But the 6-foot Wood never crumbled under the attack.

"My adrenaline was pumping," he said. "There were times that I scared myself when I came out halfway, but I can't stop now. I gave it everything I had, and it worked out well."

Burroughs dictated possession for nearly the entire first half. Forward Stephen McMillian directed a Bombers attack that was stymied repeatedly by Wood and a defense that swept in and cleared balls from the box.

The Current had few meaningful shots on goal on the afternoon.

"We have not been a team that's dominated possession all season," Peet said. "Our strength is to go long and then attack."

The game's lone score was doozy. Soon after the whistle blew to start the second half, Burroughs, no surprise, gained possession. But suddenly the ball got to the foot of the 6-1 Witherspoon, who let it rip. The ball had enough carry to sail over the head of keeper Alex Spencer.

"Our keeper may have been playing a little high, but we had possession and then there was a quick turnover," Trzecki said. "Their shot came from such a distance. But the wind held it up and it came down over the top."

The game originally was scheduled for Tuesday at Midwest Soccer Academy. Tuesday's rain caused the postponement to Wednesday, and the wet grounds forced a move to the artificial turf at Burroughs.

"When we found out that it was going to be here on the turf, I was a little apprehensive," Wood said. "Our coaches thought we would have an advantage on a wet and muddy field."
